About Our Speakers
Kathy Murphy, MPA
Kathy Murphy, MPA, serves as the President of the Delaware American Council on Education Women’s Network (DAWN). DAWN is committed to advancing women leaders in higher education. DAWN provides information, counsel, and support to constituencies within the higher education community, focusing on women’s equity, diversity, and advancement. Kathy is also the Associate Director of the Institute for Public Administration and the Coordinator of the Conflict Resolution Program at the University of Delaware. Her primary role is to provide expert facilitation, mediation and training services to state and local governments, non-profit organization, K-12 public and charter schools, and higher education institutions. She also has a secondary faculty appointment in the Joseph R. Biden School of Public Policy and Administration where she teaches conflict resolution and organizational leadership courses. She has a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Delaware and an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Goldey-Beacom College.
Karen Sheats, Ed.D., SHRM-CP, CDTLF
As Wilmington University’s Senior Director of Human Resources, Dr. Karen Ann Sheats is known for her energy, leadership capabilities and collaborative nature. With more than 25 years of experience in the areas of employee management and human resources, Dr. Sheats has capitalized on her personal leadership qualities and professional experience to become a key contributor and strategic partner in developing employee engagement and morale. Dr. Sheats is a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator, having had an exceptional opportunity to train with the world-renowned Dr. Brené Brown in 2019. Based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown, Dare to Lead™ is an empirically based program focused on vulnerability, trust, values, and resilience as critical leadership skills. Additionally, she is an Adjunct Faculty member at Wilmington University with experience in online curriculum development and instruction in the areas of Human Resources Management, Compensation Administration, Human Resources Leadership and Change Management. Dr. Sheats is the President-Elect of the Delaware American Council on Education Women's Network, a member of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA) and the Delaware and National Chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She holds Master’s degrees in Human Resource Management and Homeland Security, and a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Innovation.
